4 Ford Mustang Bumper Lip Options
The Ford Mustang has a ground clearance of under 6 inches, so it’s pretty common for a Mustang bumper to get all scratched up. A lot of Mustang owners remedy this issue by installing a bumper lip underneath the front bumper. Not all bumper lips are created equal, though. Some are more effective than others.
Let's take a look at the 4 most common bumper lip types for Mustangs and find out which one delivers the most bang for the buck.
1. ABS Plastic
A bumper lip made out of ABS plastic is affordable and is a medium strength car lip. ABS stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, which is a common thermoplastic polymer.
ABS plastic bumper lips usually come in black, and they can be painted or installed on the car as is. While ABS plastic bumper lips will protect your front bumper from curbs, speed bumps, and other obstacles on the road, they’re still vulnerable to damage. This is especially true on a low ground clearance car like the Mustang.
If you install an ABS plastic bumper lip on your Mustang, it’ll likely crack or get scratched with daily use. It’s cheaper to fix or replace than the actual bumper, but it’s still a hassle. ABS plastic bumper lips are notoriously difficult to install.
2. Carbon Fiber
Carbon fiber is a high-end material that costs top dollar. A high price tag may make people think that a bumper lip made out of carbon fiber is a good investment, but it’s actually not.
While carbon fiber is a strong and lightweight material that’s an ideal solution for aircraft, wind energy, etc., it’s not a good material to use as a bumper lip.
That’s because carbon fiber can shatter into pieces when the impact is hard enough. It also tends to become more brittle in colder temperatures, which increases the risk of the bumper lip shattering.
In our opinion, a carbon fiber bumper lip is a pretty risky investment because carbon fiber bumper lips have the above mentioned vulnerabilities yet typically cost over $1,000.
3. Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO)
TPO is another plastic bumper lip. It’s the more popular solution than ABS plastic bumper lips because it’s more flexible. TPO is a combination of:
- Rubber or an elastomer
- Some sort of filler
The unique combination makes the material:
- Extra strong
- Resistant to scratches
A TPO bumper lip is better at resisting damage than one that’s made of ABS plastic or carbon fiber. But, it can still break if the impact is strong enough, and it’s pretty expensive.
While a TPO bumper lip is a step in the right direction, there’s an even better solution: a bumper lip that’s made entirely of rubber.
4. All-Fit Lip Kit
Rubber bumper lips are flexible enough not to crack or shatter when hit by something. They’re designed to bend when impacted, which actually protects the front bumper even more. However, not all rubber bumper lips on the market are sturdy enough to withstand being dragged over a speed bump, curb, or another obstacle.
While shopping for a rubber bumper lip, you want to look for one that’s made of high-quality rubber that can withstand a lot of abuse. The All-Fit lip is a great choice.
The All-Fit Bumper Lip Kit is built in the USA with premium durable rubber. It’s also affordable and easy to install. You also have a few colors to choose from if you want a color instead of black for your vehcile's bumper lip.
