When To Repair And When To Replace Your Rims

When you have damaged rims, you’re faced with a dilemma. Should you repair your rims, or should you replace them? There’s no universal answer to this question. It’s on a case-by-case basis. In some situations, repairing your rims makes more sense than replacing them. In other situations, replacing your rims may be the only solution.

If you’re not sure whether you should repair or replace your rims, we may be able to help you decide on the best thing to do. You should base your decision on two big factors:

1. The Type Of Damage Your Rims Have

Wheel damage

In any situation, you can replace your rims. You can’t say the same about repairing your rims. It’s an acceptable solution only in certain situations. Sometimes rims can get damaged beyond repair.

If your wheel has minor damage, such as curb rash, then you may be able to repair it. If the damage is severe enough to compromise the wheel’s structural integrity, then you need to replace it. The most common types of damage that render a wheel useless or unsafe to use include:

  • Bent area(s)
  • Cracks anywhere in the wheel
  • Damaged lug holes

You could have a professional repair severely damaged rims, but it’s going to be expensive. It’s easier and sometimes cheaper to replace your rims. You’ll also have the peace of mind that your new rims have good structural integrity.

2. Your Budget

If your wheels can be repaired, you may still opt to replace them. If your budget allows for it, that is. If your budget only allows for repairs, wheel replacements aren’t in the cards. If you can replace your wheels, you have two options:

  1. Get a replacement only for your damaged wheel(s). This option is very limited, though, because your replacement wheel(s) need to match the other wheels on your car.
  2. Get a whole new set of wheels.
