Replacement Options For The Plastic Strip Under Your Front Bumper

Bumpers are designed to absorb minor impacts when bumping into a curb, speed bump, or something else. If they do get damaged, they can be pretty expensive to repair or replace.

That’s why some automakers add a plastic strip (also called a front lower valance or air dam) to the bottom of the bumper on their cars. However, these plastic strips are also vulnerable to damage, as plastic breaks easily. So once the plastic strip on your bumper breaks, your bumper is exposed and damage is more likely to happen.

Luckily, you can swap out the plastic strip for something sturdier. Here are several options:

1. Aftermarket Valance

Valance

An aftermarket valance is a good option if you’re looking to give your car a unique, sportier appearance. You can even get an OEM-style aftermarket valance if you’re on a budget and if you prefer the OEM look.

Keep in mind that you might need to paint your aftermarket valance before installing it. Also, an aftermarket valance has just as much of a chance of breaking as an OEM one does. So if you’re looking for a better way to protect your front bumper, you might want to go with another option.

2. Transparent Film

Film

If you want to increase your car's ground clearance, you can skip the plastic strip replacement and apply a transparent film over the front bumper. This can easily be done with a 3M transparent film that’s meant for car hoods. It’s pretty expensive, though, and the installation process is time consuming.

This is a good way to prevent light scrapes and scratches on your front bumper, but it won’t provide protection if there’s any real impact.

3. Rubber Bumper Lip

All-fit installed

Replacing the plastic strip with a rubber bumper strip is a great and inexpensive way to add some real protection to your front bumper. It’s actually an upgrade.

Unlike the plastic strip, a well-made rubber bumper lip will stay intact when being dragged over a curb or speed bump. In fact, it’ll even bend up against the bumper, which provides further, improved protection.

When it comes to bumper lips, quality is everything. The All-Fit Bumper Lip Kit is as high quality as they come. It’s built with durable rubber, and it’s designed to provide maximum protection.
